Civil Rights Timeline - Black Power

  • 1951 - Black Muslims formed by Elijah Muhammad.
  • 1952 - Reformed criminal and drug addickt Malcolm Little is released from Prison, Joins the Black Muslims and takes the name Malcolm X.
  • March 1964 - Malcolm X left the Black Muslims and created his own organization.
  • June 1964 - Three civil rights workers disappered from Mississippi and were later found beaten and shot.
  • February 1965 - Malcolm X was shot and killed.
  • 1966 - Two cicl rights organizations, SNCC and CORE, embraced Black Nationalism.
  • July 1966 - James Meredith was shot while marching for voting rights in Mississippi.
  • October 1966 - The Black Panthers were formed in Oakland, California
  • August 11, 1965 - Riots started in Watts, Los Angeles after a 21 year old was arrested for drunk driving.
  • Summer 1967 - Riots occured in 127 cities. Numerous people were killed, injured or arrested.
  • April 4, 1968 - Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee. Riots started in 168 citites. More people dead, injured or arrested.
